The Edo State Police Command has recently expressed its grave concerns over the surge in cult-related violence within Benin metropolis, particularly noting the loss of one of its officers in the ongoing battle against cultism. This statement comes in the wake of several killings attributed to suspected rival cult groups, including the tragic incidents on Christmas Eve involving the deaths of a popular radio presenter, a vigilante commander, and a police inspector.

The recent outbreak of violence, reportedly between the Eiye and Black Axe confraternities, has led to a series of fatal clashes, instilling fear and disrupting the peace of the holiday season. Among the victims was Mr. Hilary Nosa Odia, a well-known staff member of Independent Television and Radio, whose death has been particularly noted by the police force.

The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, issued a statement acknowledging the distressing situation and assuring the public of the force’s dedication to restoring peace and order. The Police Commissioner, Mohammed Dankwara, also appealed to the residents of Edo state to remain calm and continue their Christmas celebrations, promising the safety of lives and property.

In a solemn reflection on the recent events, the police command admitted the loss of one of their personnel during an operation in the Ugbowo axis on December 24, 2023. This loss highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face while confronting the deadly activities of secret cults. Despite this tragic setback, the police have reported making a significant number of arrests of suspected cult members across various locations in the state, indicating a proactive approach to tackling the issue.

Commissioner Dankwara reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the citizenry and residents of Edo State during the festive period. He emphasized the need for community participation in policing efforts, urging citizens to provide any information that could assist in preventing further violence and apprehending those responsible for the recent spate of killings.

As the police continue their efforts to quell the violence and bring the perpetrators to justice, the community is reminded of the collective responsibility to maintain peace and assist law enforcement in creating a safe environment for all. The statement from the Edo State Police Command serves as a solemn reminder of the ongoing challenges they face and their unwavering dedication to protecting the public from the scourge of cult-related violence.
