In a significant crackdown on cult activities, the Osun Amotekun Corps, in collaboration with the Police Anti-Cultism Squad, has arrested eight suspected members of secret cults in Ilesa Town, Osun State. The arrests, which occurred between Thursday and Monday, were part of a coordinated effort to maintain law and order during the Iwude Ijesa Celebration, a significant cultural festival in the region.
Brig.-Gen. Bashir Adewinmbi, the State Commander of Osun Amotekun Corps, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Tuesday. He noted that some of the apprehended individuals were involved in an attack on the Amotekun Anti-Cultism Squad on Saturday. The operation was a proactive measure to forestall disturbances and ensure the safety of residents and attendees of the Iwude Ijesa Celebration.
The individuals arrested include Kareem Ojo (32), Adedamola Salamo (26), Olatunji Ezekiel (24), Adeyeye Adekunle (33), and Tope Oguntade (35). They are suspected of being members of a secret cult and engaging in drug selling activities in Ilesa Town. An additional three suspects, Adetunde Adeolu, Ajayi Wale, and Busuyi Ojo, were apprehended on Monday. Notably, Ojo, identified as an Eiye Confraternity hitman, was found in possession of two live cartridge bullets, charms, and other dangerous weapons.
During the interrogation, the suspects confessed to being long-time members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities and have been on the wanted list of the Osun Police Anti-Cultism Unit for an extended period. The arrests mark a significant victory for law enforcement in the region, highlighting their commitment to dismantling organized crime networks and cult groups that threaten the peace and security of communities.
The combined efforts of the Osun Amotekun Anti-Cultism Squad and the Police Anti-Cultism Squad were instrumental in the successful apprehension of these individuals. The suspects have since been handed over to the Police Anti-Cultism Unit for further investigation and prosecution, signaling the authorities’ resolve to hold those involved in cult-related activities accountable for their actions.
As the community reels from the revelations of cult involvement in their midst, the decisive actions taken by the joint task force serve as a reassurance of their dedication to maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law. The continued vigilance and cooperation between various security agencies are crucial in the ongoing fight against cultism and other forms of organized crime.
