In a recent surge of cult-related violence in Edo State, the longstanding rivalry between the Black Axe and Eiye confraternities has intensified, resulting in a significant loss of life and widespread fear among residents. The conflict, which has seen a sharp increase in casualties, has claimed at least 16 lives across various districts in the state.

Disturbing Surge in Fatalities:
The streets of Benin City, the state capital, have become battlegrounds for these cult groups, with reports indicating that bodies were discovered in areas including Okhoro, Medical Stores, Uwelu, and Ebvaeke. Police sources, though unauthorised to speak officially, have confirmed the rise in fatalities, noting that the killings are concentrated in metropolitan local governments like Oredo and Egor. The violent clashes, which reignited on December 16, 2023, have led to a manhunt for a target related to financial disputes from internet scams, further fueling the conflict.

Targeted Attacks and Reprisals:
The renewed violence has been marked by targeted attacks and bloody reprisals. On Christmas Eve, a notable escalation occurred with the murder of four individuals, including a journalist, in separate incidents across the city. Among the deceased was a Benin-based cinematographer and presenter, Mr. Hilary Odia, who was killed at his residence. A vigilante commander and two others also fell victim to the violence, with some reports suggesting that innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire of the rival groups.

Law Enforcement’s Response:
In response to the escalating violence, the Edo State Police Command has made a number of arrests and is actively pursuing members of the involved cults. The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Dankwara, has expressed a commitment to vigorously combatting the cult violence, emphasizing the need for peace in the state. Despite these efforts, there remains a sense of urgency and apprehension as the community seeks an end to the bloodshed.

The situation in Edo State highlights the pervasive issue of cult-related violence in Nigeria, where rivalries often lead to tragic outcomes. As authorities work to restore order and the community mourns its losses, there is a collective call for lasting solutions to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of all residents. The state’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of unchecked gang violence and the critical need for effective intervention and prevention strategies.
