In a startling incident in Murang’a, Kenya, local authorities detained 23 individuals allegedly engaged in cultic rituals at the revered Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine on December 31, 2023. The group, comprising eleven men, eleven women, and a young boy, was found with knives and other items thought to be used in ritualistic activities. The police were tipped off by concerned locals who observed the group slaughtering a goat, a practice often linked with traditional ceremonies or cultic activities.

Murang’a County Police Commander David Kainga spearheaded the operation, leading to the arrest of the individuals, ten of whom were from Nairobi and the remaining from local areas. The suspicion arises from the potential affiliation of these individuals with the outlawed Mungiki sect, known for its controversial and often violent practices. The items recovered from the scene, including tobacco, horns, sugarcane, traditional muratina brew, a fly whisk, and a flag bearing three colors associated with the sect, further fueled these suspicions.

Commander Kainga emphasized the seriousness of the matter, noting the ongoing investigations to ascertain the true intent of the detained individuals. The apprehension reflects the authorities’ heightened vigilance against the resurgence of the Mungiki sect, especially in the central region of Kenya, where such groups have historically been active.

Conversely, the detainees and the shrine’s custodians contested the allegations. One of the arrested, Waweru Chira, argued that their visit was purely cultural, aiming to understand and revive traditional practices. Chira, claiming to be an appointed ambassador for the shrine, stated that this wasn’t their first visit and that the goat slaughtering was a customary activity for visitors, particularly elders. Kamau Kibe, a custodian, also denied any illegal activities, insisting that the shrine serves as a cultural center where learning about traditions is encouraged.

This incident has sparked a debate between upholding cultural practices and ensuring community safety against potentially dangerous cultic activities. As the investigation continues, the community awaits clarity on whether these individuals were merely practicing their cultural rites or if there’s a more sinister undertone to their actions. The police remain firm in their stance, warning against the regrouping of outlawed sects and urging public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities. This case unfolds as a crucial example of the delicate balance between cultural preservation and national security.
