In a heart-wrenching incident in Rayong, eastern Thailand, a 41-year-old veterinarian, Nongluck Muangkhiao, and her 12-year-old daughter, Nichapha Leelart, were found dead in what is believed to be a double suicide linked to depression and cult involvement. The estranged husband of Nongluck has indicated that her mental health struggles and affiliation with a cult that practiced unusual rituals might have driven the tragic event.

Thaweesak Boonthawee, a 52-year-old employee of Nongluck, discovered the bodies on January 2 at her residence and promptly alerted the Baan Chang Police Station. Thaweesak grew concerned when Nongluck did not show up at the veterinary clinic as expected. Upon reaching her house and failing to receive a response, he entered to find the veterinarian and her daughter lying face-up on the bed, with Nongluck embracing Nichapha. Two pet birds were also found dead in their cage, adding to the grim scene.

A bottle of cyanide, an empty bowl with remnants of the poison, 100,000 baht in cash, and a suicide note were found near the bed. The note’s haunting message read, “Put us in the same coffin. No funeral ceremony. Just cremation. Hope our deaths bring freedom to the universe.” The police have confirmed that there were no signs of theft and that the mother and daughter had ingested cyanide, leading to their deaths at least five hours before they were discovered.

Nongluck’s husband, who had been living separately from her for some time without formal divorce, visited the police station for questioning. He recounted that Nongluck’s mental health began deteriorating three years prior, coinciding with her mother’s severe illness and subsequent bedridden state. He revealed that recently, Nongluck had become involved with a cult known for its bizarre rituals and the belief that followers must give up all their money to achieve entry into heaven. The husband strongly suspects that the cult’s ideologies and rituals influenced the tragic decision, as reflected in the cryptic message left by Nongluck.

The case has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the influence of cults and the critical importance of mental health support. As investigations continue, this tragedy underscores the devastating impact of psychological distress and the potentially harmful allure of cults promising salvation or freedom in exchange for drastic actions. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the need for vigilance and comprehensive support for those struggling with mental health issues and the potentially dangerous influences of cultic groups.
