In a significant operation by the Rivers State Police Command, Silas Oderereke, known as ‘General’, the notorious leader of the Greenlanders cult group, was neutralized during a confrontational gun battle. This operation, which took place in the Ubie clan of the Ahoada-West Local Government Area, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to combat cult-related violence and criminal activities in the state.

‘General’, who had been at the helm of the Greenlanders for some time, was infamous for his involvement in various criminal undertakings, particularly orchestrating robbery attacks on innocent civilians in neighboring communities. His reign of terror came to an end this weekend after a four-year pursuit by law enforcement agencies.

According to SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, the operation to apprehend ‘General’ was a carefully orchestrated effort. Despite the high risks involved, the police officers engaged in a fierce gun battle with Oderereke and his associates. This encounter ultimately led to the demise of the cult leader, while two of his associates, known by the aliases ‘Danger Boy’ and ‘2 Man’, managed to evade capture and are currently at large.

The aftermath of this operation revealed a G3 Rifle and nineteen 7.62x51mm ammunition at the gang’s hideout, providing tangible evidence of their criminal operations. Further investigations led to the discovery of a camp established by Oderereke, strategically positioned between Oderereke and Olokuma Communities. This camp reportedly served as a base for the cult leader and his followers, facilitating their criminal activities, including robberies.

The success of this operation was acknowledged by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, who praised the officers for their exceptional work and bravery. CP Disu’s statement underlines the seriousness with which the Rivers State Police Command is addressing the issue of cultism in the state. He issued a stern warning to other cultists, urging them to renounce their criminal activities and abandon cultism, or else face the full weight of the law.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in dealing with cult groups, which are often deeply entrenched in local communities and engage in a variety of criminal activities. The operation against ‘General’ and the Greenlanders is part of a broader strategy by the Rivers State Police to dismantle these groups and restore peace and safety to the affected communities.

As the investigation continues, the public is encouraged to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining associates of ‘General’. The police remain committed to ensuring that all those involved in these criminal activities are brought to justice.
