A recent outbreak of violence in Ogun State, Nigeria, has left a community shaken following a deadly cult clash. The incident, which took place in the Afobaje area of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, resulted in the death of an unidentified male adult and the injury of another individual, Kazeem Abiola.
The clash occurred midday on Friday when armed individuals, suspected to be members of a confraternity, launched an attack in the area. The fatal victim was shot in the chest and suffered a machete wound, while Abiola was shot in the abdomen. Both victims were discovered following the arrival of the police at the scene, amidst the chaos and panic that ensued during the attack. Eyewitnesses described the attackers as men on motorcycles who stormed the area, attacking two persons and causing residents to flee in fear of the gunshots.
The clash is believed to be a confrontation between two rival cult groups, the Eiye and Alora confraternities, known for their violent turf wars and criminal activities. These groups have been a longstanding concern in the region, often engaging in violent conflicts that result in casualties and widespread fear among the local population.
In response to the incident, Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the clash and the current treatment of the injured victim in a health facility. The State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu, has initiated a manhunt for the suspects involved in the clash. He has also assured the public that measures are being taken to ensure safety and has encouraged people to continue their daily activities without fear.
This incident is a stark reminder of the ongoing issues with cult violence in Nigeria, particularly in Ogun State. Cult clashes often result in loss of life and injuries, instilling fear and insecurity among residents.
