The Anti-Cultism Unit of the Ogun State Police Command in Nigeria has recently apprehended a 30-year-old man, Ademuyiwa Sodiq Akanni, suspected of being a member of a proscribed cult group. The arrest took place in the Adigbe area of the state, following credible information about the presence of suspected cultists. During the arrest, police recovered a locally made pistol and a cartridge from Akanni.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola disclosed that Akanni confessed to being a member of the Buccaneers Confraternity, also known as “Alora.” This confession has provided valuable insights, aiding the police in their ongoing efforts to locate other hideouts of the cult. The Buccaneers Confraternity is a widespread organization with a global presence, including in countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Malaysia, and mainland Europe. The group was originally founded in 1972 at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Odutola emphasized the commitment of the Ogun State Police to eradicate cultism and its associated activities in the state. She announced that Akanni would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation. This investigation aims to gather additional evidence and uncover potential connections to the cult group.
This arrest highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian authorities in combating cultism, a persistent problem in the country. Cult groups like the Buccaneers Confraternity are often involved in criminal activities, including violence and illegal possession of weapons. The efforts of the Ogun State Police in apprehending suspected cult members and disrupting their activities are crucial steps in addressing the broader issue of cultism in Nigeria.
