Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki of Kenya has officially declared Good News International Ministries, led by controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie, as an organized criminal group. This significant development, announced on January 31, 2024, is based on Section 22(1) of the Prevention of Organized Crimes Act. The decision by CS Kindiki comes in the wake of serious allegations and legal actions against Mackenzie and associated individuals.

The ministry, located in Shakahola, Kilifi County, has been at the center of a suspected cult linked to the death of over 400 individuals between January 2021 and September 2023. The case has gained national attention, highlighting the grim reality of the situation and the subsequent legal proceedings.

In court, the processing of DNA from 429 bodies has been hampered due to the severe decay of 360 bodies, adding to the complexity and severity of the investigation. The autopsy process, as a result, has become difficult, expensive, time-consuming, and delicate.

Paul Mackenzie, alongside 95 other accused persons, faces multiple charges, including terrorism, radicalization, manslaughter, cruelty, and child torture. These charges reflect the gravity of the accusations against them, emphasizing the alleged extreme and harmful activities carried out under the guise of religious practice.

The suspects have all denied the charges against them. However, due to the seriousness of the allegations, Mackenzie and his co-accused have remained in custody, with the prosecution successfully applying for their continued detention. This detention was extended for an additional 180 days in late December by the Shanzu court, as part of the ongoing investigation and legal process.

This case is a significant step in addressing organized criminal activities disguised as religious movements, demonstrating the Kenyan government’s commitment to ensuring justice and the safety of its citizens.
